S L I M E ! ! !

We have been learning about procedural writing. We decided we wanted to write a recipe or instructions for something. Whaea Chloe was lucky enough to be sent some ingredients to make slime so we decided to make it and write how we did it.
We know that the key parts of the recipe were:

  • Title
  • Ingredients
  • Equipment
  • Method (Step by step instructions)
We got into groups to make the slime and it was so much fun!
Here are some of our recipes.

Rippa Rugby Fun

We had Hayley from Northland Rugby Union come to school and teach us how to play Rippa Rugby. It was so much fun! We got to learn new drills and have a game against the other teams. Some of us were really speedy at running through the others and getting tries and some of us were really good at ripping off the tags. We enjoyed learning how to play rippa and we are going to play it with Whaea Chloe because Haley gave us our own set of rippa rugby gear.

Real Rad Reading!

We had the re-opening of our library. This was an exciting day because we also had character day and could dress up at our favorite book character. We also had lots of fun reading activities planned for the day. The one we liked the best was buddy reading. We got to read to the younger students and some of the senior read to us too. This was so much fun and it was awesome to work with the tuakana and teina of the school. We talked to our principal about doing buddy reading more so hopefully we will get to do it again soon.

What floats? What sinks?

We were learning about floating and sinking. We wanted to find out what floats and what sinks.
Some of the things we learned is that some materials float first then they soak up the water and become heavy.
It was fun. We liked discovering that something we thought would float actually sunk.
Trace liked being a scientist and discovering new things.
We learned some new vocabulary like density, buoyancy, and mass.

Our Plays!

We have been doing plays during our reading time. We read them with Whaea Chloe, choose our characters, get our props and then practice performing them. Our whole class comes out and watches us perform. It has been fun and we like getting into character and changing our voice and actions to suit our character. We did one about a sad clown who makes sad jokes and a pirate one about treasure.

Our School Fun Run!

Today we walked down town and caught the train out to the United Kawakawa rugby grounds with the rest of our school for our school fun run.
We got to run the course and do the awesome activities like hurdles (under and over), tyre run, and even a color chalk run. We had so much fun and Room 1 loved going on train dressed in our house colors.
We played fun activities with Matua Bodean that we can teach Whaea Chloe and play when we have fitness.
Some of our classmates made it to the inter-schools cross country. Well done Nikau, Bailey-Trent, Vontayveiz and Legacee.

Then and Now

We have been learning about the olden days and comparing what we do now to what people used to do. This is some of what we have learnt. We also wanted to know what our awa might have been used for in the olden days and now.
The awa was used for collecting kai, water, transport (waka), fun, washing and bathing. Now we mostly use our awa for leisure and recreation like swimming, kayaking and eeling for fun.

They performed an awesome matariki dance/show and we learnt a lot about the star cluster and meaning/traditions of matariki. This was cool because we had done matariki in term 2 and now we got to refresh what we had learnt.

Positive Vibes Only!!

We have been learning about having a growth mindset and being Mindful. We have been spending time doing relaxing breathing exercises and reading to ourselves.
We have learnt that we can have a growth mindset if we think positive and try hard. We need to make sure we don't give up or get angry when things are hard.

Learning to make stop motion animations!

Friday, 8 June 2018

Earlier this term we helped clean up our community by joining the rest of the school picking up rubbish around Kawakawa. We enjoyed doing it and know how important it is in keeping our environment clean and green.

We are learning about GERMS! We looked at what germs are, what they look like under a microscope, how they can spread and where they like to live.

We did an experiment with 3 pieces of bread. We touched one with our dirty hands, we touched one with our clean hands and then had one piece that no one touched. We put them in separate bags and left them to see what would happen!

Here are our predictions!

Here are our results!!! Ewwwww Yuck!

We think the clean hands bread was moldier because some of use accidentally used a dirty towel to dry our hands and wiped our hands on our shirts instead of the clean handy towels!!

BULLYING!

We have been discussing bullying and how we are BULLY FREE in Room 1 and Kawakawa Primary School. We wrote Cinquain Poems about Bullying. Here is our video of us reading them.

We LOVE having fruit and milk outside in the sun!

Our Creative Challenges!

Room 1 has been getting busy making and creating. Sharks, Crayfish and Kahawai reading groups have been busy making 'machines' after reading about them - We had robots, ice cream machines and lolly machines made. Snapper have been reading all about the Best Bridges and how they are made so they had a challenge to build a bridge from one desk to another. They really used the information they learned from the book to build their bridge such as using cables, piers and triangle shaped sides because that was the best shape to use for building a bridge. Scallops have been learning about dinosaurs and invented a new dinosaur they made habitats and also told me their dinosaurs features and diet.

We have been learning all about the water cycle. We made posters to show how the water cycle works.
